Worst Winter in Century

Every time the topic of the global warming myth comes up, I think about how close the Gore-acle came to winning the election.
I’m sure he’s not complaining, the global warming myth has made him very rich.

Forget global warming: Welcome to the new Ice Age

Snow cover over North America and much of Siberia, Mongolia and China is greater than at any time since 1966.

The U.S. National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) reported that many American cities and towns suffered record cold temperatures in January and early February. According to the NCDC, the average temperature in January “was -0.3 F cooler than the 1901-2000 (20th century) average.”

China is surviving its most brutal winter in a century. Temperatures in the normally balmy south were so low for so long that some middle-sized cities went days and even weeks without electricity because once power lines had toppled it was too cold or too icy to repair them.

There have been so many snow and ice storms in Ontario and Quebec in the past two months that the real estate market has felt the pinch as home buyers have stayed home rather than venturing out looking for new houses.

In just the first two weeks of February, Toronto received 70 cm of snow, smashing the record of 66.6 cm for the entire month set back in the pre-SUV, pre-Kyoto, pre-carbon footprint days of 1950.

And remember the Arctic Sea ice? The ice we were told so hysterically last fall had melted to its “lowest levels on record? Never mind that those records only date back as far as 1972 and that there is anthropological and geological evidence of much greater melts in the past.

The ice is back.

Gilles Langis, a senior forecaster with the Canadian Ice Service in Ottawa, says the Arctic winter has been so severe the ice has not only recovered, it is actually 10 to 20 cm thicker in many places than at this time last year.

OK, so one winter does not a climate make. It would be premature to claim an Ice Age is looming just because we have had one of our most brutal winters in decades.

But if environmentalists and environment reporters can run around shrieking about the manmade destruction of the natural order every time a robin shows up on Georgian Bay two weeks early, then it is at least fair game to use this winter’s weather stories to wonder whether the alarmist are being a tad premature.

And it’s not just anecdotal evidence that is piling up against the climate-change dogma.

According to Robert Toggweiler of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University and Joellen Russell, assistant professor of biogeochemical dynamics at the University of Arizona — two prominent climate modellers — the computer models that show polar ice-melt cooling the oceans, stopping the circulation of warm equatorial water to northern latitudes and triggering another Ice Age (a la the movie The Day After Tomorrow) are all wrong.

“We missed what was right in front of our eyes,” says Prof. Russell. It’s not ice melt but rather wind circulation that drives ocean currents northward from the tropics. Climate models until now have not properly accounted for the wind’s effects on ocean circulation, so researchers have compensated by over-emphasizing the role of manmade warming on polar ice melt.

But when Profs. Toggweiler and Russell rejigged their model to include the 40-year cycle of winds away from the equator (then back towards it again), the role of ocean currents bringing warm southern waters to the north was obvious in the current Arctic warming.

Last month, Oleg Sorokhtin, a fellow of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, shrugged off manmade climate change as “a drop in the bucket.” Showing that solar activity has entered an inactive phase, Prof. Sorokhtin advised people to “stock up on fur coats.”

He is not alone. Kenneth Tapping of our own National Research Council, who oversees a giant radio telescope focused on the sun, is convinced we are in for a long period of severely cold weather if sunspot activity does not pick up soon.

The last time the sun was this inactive, Earth suffered the Little Ice Age that lasted about five centuries and ended in 1850. Crops failed through killer frosts and drought. Famine, plague and war were widespread. Harbours froze, so did rivers, and trade ceased.

It’s way too early to claim the same is about to happen again, but then it’s way too early for the hysteria of the global warmers, too.

WASHINGTON – Two more Iraqis with false Bulgarian passports were detained by Mexican officials in Monterrey – bringing the total to four this month.

Wisam Gorgies, a 34-year-old man, and Rana Nazar Peyoz, a 26-year-old woman, reportedly flew from Madrid and landed in Monterrey, according to reports in two Mexican newspapers today.

Following questioning, the pair admitted they intended to reach the United States. They were taken to Saltillo in the state of Coahuila, for final determination of their status.

Mexican officials said the are investigating “a network that could be made up of Mexicans operating in Greece who are selling false Bulgarian passports for $10,000 to European and Middle Eastern citizens.”

Earlier this month, El Universal, a daily in Mexico City, reported two other Iraqis, Markos Ramy, a 25-year-old man, and Sollem Pate, a 20-year-old woman, presented Bulgarian passports upon arrival at the Monterrey airport after a flight from Spain.

They told customs officials they came as tourists for a couple days. But because they spoke no Bulgarian, their passports were determined to be fraudulent. The Bulgarian consulate did not acknowledge them as citizens and their hotel reservations proved to be phony.

Only after their cover story was blown did the couple admit to being Iraqis. They claimed to be fleeing the war.

Last year, dozens of Iraqis were discovered attempting to enter Monterrey with phony ID – 17 of them in a single event.

In addition, earlier this month, Norwegian authorities reported that Iraqis affiliated with al-Qaida and former Baath Party members may have slipped into Kuwait after obtaining $15,000 Norwegian passports. Authorities in Kuwait say they are on the lookout for any Iraqi citizen bearing a Norwegian passport.

The incidents raise the question of whether they are part of an orchestrated campaign by terrorists to enter countries targeted for attacks.

Last October, Kunio Hatoyama, Japan’s minister of justice, made an astonishing admission at the Foreign Correspondents Club in Tokyo. Asked about a new law that requires foreigners visiting his country to be photographed and fingerprinted, the official said he favored the idea.

“A friend of a friend is a member of al-Qaida,” he said. He explained he had entered Japan numerous times using false passports and disguises. “This particular person was actually involved in the bombings in the center of Bali. Although he is a friend of my friend, I was advised not to go close to the centre of Bali because it will be bombed.”

The fingerprinting policy would prevent such people from entering the country, Hatoyama concluded.

Back in 2004, WND reported that al-Qaida planned to use Mexico as an entry pointinto the U.S. In addition, the 911 commission reported the terrorist network actually owned a travel agency in Mexico.

The commission also concluded that immigration enforcement failures led directly to the 911 attack . At least seven of the 19 hijackers carried false passports.

Also in 2004, WND reported Mexico was not fully cooperating with anti-terrorist efforts because of corruption and red tape inside the government.

That same year, WND reported al-Qaida expanding operations in Mexico and Latin America because of financial pressures brought on by the war on terrorism.

This followed an admission by former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld that al-Qaida was attempting to smuggle operatives into the U.S. across the Mexican border.

In 2003, WND reported a Mexican smuggling ring specializing in bringing Middle Easterners in the U.S. was discovered.

Paraguay was also reported to be a hub for Arab terrorists.

Just a month after the 911 attack, WND reported on the evidence Arabs were routinely making the trek from Mexico to the U.S.

An undercover survey of more than 100 mosques and Islamic schools in America has exposed widespread radicalism, including the alarming finding that 3 in 4 Islamic centers are hotbeds of anti-Western extremism, WND has learned.

The Mapping Sharia in America Project, sponsored by the Washington-based Center for Security Policy, has trained former counterintelligence and counterterrorism agents from the FBI, CIA and U.S. military, who are skilled in Arabic and Urdu, to conduct undercover reconnaissance at some 2,300 mosques and Islamic centers and schools across the country.

“So far of 100 mapped, 75 should be on a watchlist,” an official familiar with the project said.

Many of the Islamic centers are operating under the auspices of the Saudi Arabian government and U.S. front groups for the radical Muslim Brotherhood based in Egypt.

Frank Gaffney, a former Pentagon official who runs the Center for Security Policy, says the results of the survey have not yet been published. But he confirmed that “the vast majority” are inciting insurrection and jihad through sermons by Saudi-trained imams and anti-Western literature, videos and textbooks.

The project, headed by David Yerushalmi, a lawyer and expert on sharia law, has finished collecting data from the first cohort of 102 mosques and schools. Preliminary findings indicate that almost 80 percent of the group exhibit a high level of sharia-compliance and jihadi threat, including:

Ultra-orthodox worship in which women are separated from men in the prayer hall and must enter the mosque from a separate, usually back, entrance; and are required to wear hijabs.
Sermons that preach women are inferior to men and can be beaten for disobedience; that non-Muslims, particularly Jews, are infidels and inferior to Muslims; that jihad or support of jihad is not only a Muslim’s duty but the noblest way, and suicide bombers and other so-called “martyrs” are worthy of the highest praise; and that an Islamic caliphate should one day encompass the U.S.

Though not all mosques in America are radicalized, many have tended to serve as safe havens and meeting points for Islamic terrorist groups. Experts say there are at least 40 episodes of extremists and terrorists being connected to mosques in the past decade alone.

Some of the 9/11 hijackers, in fact, received aid and counsel from one of the largest mosques in the Washington, D.C., area. Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center is one of the mosques indentified by undercover investigators as a hive of terrorist activity and other extremism.

It was founded and is currently run by leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood. Imams there preach what is called “jihad qital,” which means physical jihad, and incite violence and hatred against the U.S.

Dar al-Hijrah’s ultimate goal, investigators say, is to turn the U.S. into an Islamic state governed by sharia law.

Another D.C.-area mosque, the ADAMS Center, was founded and financed by members of the Muslim Brotherhood, and has been one of the top distributors of Wahhabist anti-Semitic and anti-Christian dogma.

Even with such radical mosques operating in its backyard, the U.S. government has not undertaken its own systematic investigation of U.S. mosques.

In contrast, European Union security officials are analyzing member-state mosques, examining the training and funding sources of imams, in a large-scale project.

Some U.S. lawmakers want the U.S. to conduct its own investigation.

“We have too many mosques in this country,” said Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y. “There are too many people who are sympathetic to radical Islam. We should be looking at them more carefully.”

A former Northern Illinois University newspaper reporter says the killer who gunned down five innocent students in an apparently unprovoked attack liked to study Arabic and the terror group Hamas.

“‘Assalamo alikum,’ he [Steve Kazmierczak] would say to me, which means ‘peace be with you’ in Arabic,” wrote Rasmieyh Abdelnabi in an essay published in the Chicago Sun-Times.

“He would proceed to ask me how I was doing and what I was up to, all in Arabic with a thick accent and a huge, excited smile,” she continued.

She said the two met in class at the university, took several classes together over the years, and periodically kept in touch when they didn’t share classes.

“Our topics of choice: foreign policy and the Middle East. He would especially enjoy practicing his Arabic on me. In 2004, NIU decided to offer a year’s worth of Arabic classes. Steve took both classes without hesitation, excited as could be,” she wrote.

Just over a week ago, Kazmierczak burst into a lecture hall and shot and killed five students and then himself. The New York Times reports he was taking an anti-anxiety drug and a sleeping aid in addition to the antidepressant Prozac.

But authorities have yet to announce what they believe could have been a motive for his attack, which left Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Westchester, Ill.; Catalina Garcia, 20, of Cicero, Ill.; Ryanne Mace, 19, of Carpentersville, Ill.; Julianna Gehant, 32, of Mendota, Ill.; and Gayle Dubowski, 20, of Carol Stream, Ill., dead.

On Thursday, a week after the attack, the university observed five minutes of silence, one minute for each of the victims.

Abdelnabi wrote that she initially could not believe Kazmierczak was the killer.

“But now I find myself wondering if I ever knew Steve, the man who shot and killed five people and then himself in a lecture hall at my alma mater, Northern Illinois University,” she said.

She found out about the killings through a text message from a friend, and confirmed it online.

She said she acted as his “walking dictionary” occasionally. “‘What does this word mean in English?’ or ‘What is this word in Arabic?’” she reported he would ask.

“Once we took a course called ‘The Politics of the Middle East.’ At the beginning of the course, our instructor informed us a research paper would be due by the end of the semester. Steve decided on Hamas, which is known mainly to the world as being a Palestinian terrorist group, which was the first thing that interested Steve about the group. But he also heard Hamas funded many social services, which also interested him. How could one group be put into two completely different categories, Steve would ask,” she wrote.

“Unlike most of us, Steve started his research from day one, reading every book he could find on Hamas. He’d give me a status report when we saw each other in class. Steve said that his perception of Hamas changed with all the research he did,” she said.

Authorities also have reported that Kazmierczak took several precautions that would impede investigators, including removing a memory card from his cell phone and removing the hard drive from his computer.

Hundreds of witnesses are being interviewed, but university officials have said it’s unclear of Kazmierczak’s reasons.

On a a blog called Muslim Watcher, writer Bruce Keegan noted Abdelnabi was the women’s representative in the Muslim Student Association at NIU.

There is a great amount of interest in this year’s presidential elections, as everybody seems to recognize that our next president has to be a lot better than George Bush. The Democrats are riding high with two groundbreaking candidates — a woman and an African-American — while the conservative Republicans are in a quandary about their party’s nod to a quasi-liberal maverick, John McCain.

Each candidate is carefully pandering to a smorgasbord of special-interest groups, ranging from gay, lesbian and transgender people to children of illegal immigrants to working mothers to evangelical Christians.

There is one group no one has recognized, and it is the group that will decide the election: the Angry White Man. The Angry White Man comes from all economic backgrounds, from dirt-poor to filthy rich. He represents all geographic areas in America, from urban sophisticate to rural redneck, deep South to mountain West, left Coast to Eastern Seaboard.

His common traits are that he isn’t looking for anything from anyone — just the promise to be able to make his own way on a level playing field. In many cases, he is an independent businessman and employs several people. He pays more than his share of taxes and works hard.

The victimhood syndrome buzzwords — “disenfranchised,” “marginalized” and “voiceless” — don’t resonate with him. “Press ‘one’ for English” is a curse-word to him. He’s used to picking up the tab, whether it’s the company Christmas party, three sets of braces, three college educations or a beautiful wedding.

He believes the Constitution is to be interpreted literally, not as a “living document” open to the whims and vagaries of a panel of judges who have never worked an honest day in their lives.

The Angry White Man owns firearms, and he’s willing to pick up a gun to defend his home and his country. He is willing to lay down his life to defend the freedom and safety of others, and the thought of killing someone who needs killing really doesn’t bother him.

The Angry White Man is not a metrosexual, a homosexual or a victim. Nobody like him drowned in Hurricane Katrina — he got his people together and got the hell out, then went back in to rescue those too helpless and stupid to help themselves, often as a police officer, a National Guard soldier or a volunteer firefighter.

His last name and religion don’t matter. His background might be Italian, English, Polish, German, Slavic, Irish, or Russian, and he might have Cherokee, Mexican, or Puerto Rican mixed in, but he considers himself a white American.

He’s a man’s man, the kind of guy who likes to play poker, watch football, hunt white-tailed deer, call turkeys, play golf, spend a few bucks at a strip club once in a blue moon, change his own oil and build things. He coaches baseball, soccer and football teams and doesn’t ask for a penny. He’s the kind of guy who can put an addition on his house with a couple of friends, drill an oil well, weld a new bumper for his truck, design a factory and publish books. He can fill a train with 100,000 tons of coal and get it to the power plant on time so that you keep the lights on and never know what it took to flip that light switch.

Women either love him or hate him, but they know he’s a man, not a dishrag. If they’re looking for someone to walk all over, they’ve got the wrong guy. He stands up straight, opens doors for women and says “Yes, sir” and “No, ma’am.”

He might be a Republican and he might be a Democrat; he might be a Libertarian or a Green. He knows that his wife is more emotional than rational, and he guides the family in a rational manner.

He’s not a racist, but he is annoyed and disappointed when people of certain backgrounds exhibit behavior that typifies the worst stereotypes of their race. He’s willing to give everybody a fair chance if they work hard, play by the rules and learn English.

Most important, the Angry White Man is pissed off. When his job site becomes flooded with illegal workers who don’t pay taxes and his wages drop like a stone, he gets righteously angry. When his job gets shipped overseas, and he has to speak to some incomprehensible idiot in India for tech support, he simmers. When Al Sharpton comes on TV, leading some rally for reparations for slavery or some such nonsense, he bites his tongue and he remembers. When a child gets charged with carrying a concealed weapon for mistakenly bringing a penknife to school, he takes note of who the local idiots are in education and law enforcement.

He also votes, and the Angry White Man loathes Hillary Clinton. Her voice reminds him of a shovel scraping a rock. He recoils at the mere sight of her on television. Her very image disgusts him, and he cannot fathom why anyone would want her as their leader. It’s not that she is a woman. It’s that she is who she is. It’s the liberal victim groups she panders to, the “poor me” attitude that she represents, her inability to give a straight answer to an honest question, his tax dollars that she wants to give to people who refuse to do anything for themselves.

There are many millions of Angry White Men. Four million Angry White Men are members of the National Rifle Association, and all of them will vote against Hillary Clinton, just as the great majority of them voted for George Bush.

He hopes that she will be the Democratic nominee for president in 2008, and he will make sure that she gets beaten like a drum.

John McCain said President Bush should veto a measure that would bar the CIA from using waterboarding

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio - Republican presidential candidate John McCain said President Bush should veto a measure that would bar the CIA from using waterboarding and other harsh interrogation methods on terror suspects.

McCain voted against the bill, which would restrict the CIA to using only the 19 interrogation techniques listed in the Army field manual.

His vote was controversial because the manual prohibits waterboarding - a simulated drowning technique that McCain also opposes - yet McCain doesn’t want the CIA bound by the manual and its prohibitions.

McCain, who was tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, is well-known for his opposition to waterboarding, which puts him at odds with the Bush administration.

“I knew I would be criticized for it,” McCain told reporters Wednesday in Ohio. “I think I can show my record is clear. I said there should be additional techniques allowed to other agencies of government as long as they were not” torture.

“I was on the record as saying that they could use additional techniques as long as they were not cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment,” McCain said. “So the vote was in keeping with my clear record of saying that they could have additional techniques, but those techniques could not violate” international rules against torture.

The legislation bars the CIA from using waterboarding, sensory deprivation or other harsh coercive methods to break a prisoner who refuses to answer questions. Those practices were banned by the military in 2006.

President Bush has threatened to veto the legislation, which cleared the House in December and won Senate approval last week.

One supporter of the bill, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said last week that if Bush vetoes the measure, “he will be voting in favor of waterboarding.”

If a president disagrees with legislation, he should veto it, McCain said. He said he disapproves that Bush sometimes signs legislation he dislikes, then issues critical “signing statements” outlining his objections.

McCain said he would never issue a critical signing statement: “If I disagree with a law that’s passed, I’ll veto it.”

“I think if you disagree with a law, you have a constitutional right to veto that, authority to veto that,” McCain said.

More Global Warming Nonsense

Guess who these “researchers” are? The UN’s IPCC at it agian. The reason Lake Mead is low is because of a drought and the non stop building of cities and towns using more and more water !!! The building cannot be sustained by the water available. These UN goons scour the globe and spin issues like this for their agenda that man made global warming is to blame for all environmental ills. Al Gores chart had our CO2 emmisions going through the roof and increasing every year with the temperature. How could it be then that most of the planet is suffering through one of the worst winters in decades?? According to Gore and the UN the temperatue is shooting upwad out of control. WAke Up People !!!! It’s the f’ing sun !!!! Increases in solar activity raise earth’s temp (and Mars, Venus, etc) causing vegetation to thrive on land and in the oceans to produces more CO2 from their decay and release of the oceans vast CO2 reserves (the ocean functions as a co2 tank, heat releases more of the co2) - NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND !!!!!

PHOENIX - Changes in climate and strong demand for Colorado River water could drain Lake Mead by 2021, triggering severe shortages across the region, scientists warn.

Researchers at San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography said Tuesday the West’s largest storage reservoir faces increasing threats from human-induced climate change, growing populations and natural forces like drought and evaporation.

There is a 50 percent chance Lake Mead will run dry by 2021 and a 10 percent chance it will run out of usable water by 2014, if the region’s drought deepens and water use climbs, the researchers said.

“We were stunned at the magnitude of the problem and how fast it was coming at us,” said marine physicist Tim Barnett. “Make no mistake, this water problem is not a scientific abstraction but rather one that will impact each and every one of us that live in the Southwest.”

Currently, Lake Mead - located in Nevada and Arizona - is half-full, as is Lake Powell. Both lakes help manage water resources for more than 25 million people in seven states.

Researchers said that if Lake Mead water levels drop below 1,000 feet, Nevada would lose access to all its river allocation, Arizona would lose much of the water that flows through the Central Arizona Project Canal, and power production would cease before the lake level reached bottom.

The Truth About Muslim Jihad Through History

Many people, like Ron Paul, wrongly believe that our presence in the Middle East in what drives their hate for us.  Some even bring up the bad “Christians ” in the Crusades to justify the begining of this Muslim anti west hatred. Well here is what the liberal media fails to tell you.

1. The Quran and Islamic “Holy Books” call for death and subjugation of all non-believers. Mohammed was much different than the peaceful religious leaders of the other world religions.  No turning the other cheek or spreading the word and message of love and forgiveness with him.  Mohammed was a fighter and led many of his followers in battles against the pagan tribes ( the Hawazin & Thaqif tribes) to force Islam throughout the Middle East by the sword.

2.  Before Mohammed died he contacted the Byzantine emporer, Heraclius, and other rulers in the region by letter;
“The Prophet of Allah wrote to Choseroes (King of Persia), Ceasar (King of Rome), Negus (King of Abyssinia) and every other despot inviting them to Allah, the exalted. He exhorted them to embrace iIslam and you will be safe.
None did, and Mohammeds warning was accurate- Muslims invaded the Byzantine Empire.
In 635 Damascus fell to Muslim Invaders
In 636 Umar took Al-Basrah in Iraq
In 637 , the birthplace of the first Christians, Antioch, fell .
In 639 Jerusalem fell.  Amr began the invasion of Egypt
In 642 Alexandria fell.  Armenia also fell “The enemy’s army rushed in and butchered the inhabitants of the town by the sword…after a few days rest the Arabs went back from wence they came, dragging with them a host of captives.”
In 650 Cilicia andCaesrea of Capppadocia fell- “They led everyone into slavery-women,men,and children-and they commited much debauchery in that unfortunate town; they wickedly committed immoralities inside churches”

Then came the Europe Invasions;
First there were raids on Cyprus,Rhodes, Crete, and Scicily.
Then they took seize of the Constantinople in 668 and 717. “The great god says in the quran- O true believers , when you encounter the unbelievers, strike off their heads .”
They swept through all of Christian North Africa in 711 and were ready to invade Europe.
In 715 they had conquered most of Spain and began pushing into France (Charles “the Hammer” Martel stopped thm in the city of Tours in 732) They would call for “jihad” three more times over a hundred years and wreak havoc on France.
In 827 Sicily and Italy was invaded.  In 846 they reached Rome and exacted tribute from the Pope.  They would hold Scicily until the Normans drove them out in 1091 !!!
Parts of Spain were held until the time of Columbus ,1400’s !!!!

Now understand that this all happened well before the first Crusade in 1095.  What do all the places above have in common ?????  THEY WERE CHRISTIAN LANDS !!!!!   There was NO SUCH THING AS ISLAM BEFORE MOHAMMED !!!!  HE STARTED THE MOVEMENT THAT TOOK OVER THESE LANDS FROM CHRISTIANS AND PAGANS!!!!
The Crusades were western attempts to get back the stolen land !!!!!
They have been in jihad ever since Mohammed commanded it.  They are a danger today because of the vast finances their oil affords them to carry out attacks on the West. They will not and have never stopped “If we leave them alone” !!!

 Don’t be a sheeple , learn for yourself, don’t trust the liberal media.

‘Coldest and snowiest’

Snowstorm sweeps across Midwest
Hundreds of flights grounded in Chicago; schools closed, roads a mess

MILWAUKEE - A major snowstorm lumbered across the Midwest on Wednesday, forcing hundreds of schools and businesses to close and grounding more than 1,000 flights as snow piled more than 20 inches deep in some areas.

Blustery winds created near-whiteout conditions in southern Wisconsin, where slick roads were blamed for two traffic deaths. Snowplow operators were called off the roads shortly before noon in Green County, highway Commissioner Dallas Cecil said.

“The winds are blowing so hard the guys can’t see the front of their trucks,” he said.

Just over 20 inches of snow fell in Saukville and 19 inches at Jackson, both north of Milwaukee.

Occasional brief periods of blizzard-like conditions developed along the Lake Michigan shoreline from Milwaukee to Kenosha as the snowfall picked up Wednesday, said meteorologist Rusty Kapela of the National Weather Service’s Sullivan office.

Less snow fell in Missouri, with 6 inches in places, but it was enough to form ice on bridges and highway ramps. A 12-car pileup near Springfield closed Interstate 44 for about an hour.

“When those things freeze, they all go at the same time,” said Earl Wallace, a spokesman for Missouri’s highway department.

Schools and universities canceled classes in parts of Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan, where up to 14 inches of snow fell north of Detroit. The Detroit area got a mix of rain, snow and sleet.

The storms also caused Walworth County court officials to cancel proceedings Wednesday in Mark Jensen’s lengthy trial in Elkhorn, Wis. Jensen is accused of poisoning and suffocating his wife in 1998.

 

All flights were stopped at General Mitchell International Airport at Milwaukee, airport spokeswoman Pat Rowe said.

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport canceled about 1,000 flights, said Gregg Cunningham, spokesman for the city’s aviation department. Across the city at Midway Airport, there were 100 cancellations and delays on remaining flights of about two hours, Cunningham said.

‘Coldest and snowiest’
In Iowa, the foot of snow that fell at Oskaloosa came on top of 12 inches that fell Sunday, making it nearly impossible for people to get around.

“It’s a mess. Nobody is out too much and if they are they’re getting stuck,” said Wade Schneckler, 47, of Oskaloosa.

Brad Small, a forecaster with the National Weather Service, called this winter Iowa’s “coldest and snowiest” since 2000-01. The harshness has led to shortages of road salt in many cities, including Tipton, in eastern Iowa.

Getting more will be difficult because a frozen Mississippi River has blocked barge traffic.

“You just got to roll with the punches,” said Public Works Director Steve Nash. “We’ve got enough to last us for two or three weeks, but if this snow thing continues through March, then we could be in trouble.”
